The Creek Road bridge will be closed and the road detour will be implemented beginning 9: a.m. on Monday, April 1, 2024. Upon completion of the new bridge construction and associated roadwork, the detour will be lifted and traffic restored on or before November 14, 2025.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction will begin on Monday, April 1, on a $15.2 million project to replace the South Creek Road bridge over the East Penn Railroad and Brandywine Creek in Pennsbury Township, Chester County and Chadds Ford Township, Delaware County, to ensure a safe and efficient crossing for the traveling public.
Under this project, PennDOT's contractor will replace the existing 27-foot-wide, 99-year-old structure with a new two-lane, slightly wider, six-span pre-cast reinforced concrete arch bridge.
In addition, the open steel bridge railing, with concrete pilasters at the piers, was chosen to allow scenic viewing. Other features include recessed panels and new signage, plaques, and delineators.
Beginning, Monday, April 1, motorists and bicyclists are advised of the following travel restriction:
- Monday, April 1, through fall 2025, South Creek Road will be closed 1200 feet south of Bullock Road and 1.1 miles north of Cossart Road.
During the closure motorists are directed to use U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike), Route 52 (Kennett Pike), Center Meeting Road, and Delaware State Route 100 (Montchanin Road). Bicyclists traveling Bike Route L will be directed to use Bullock Road, Ring Road, Ridge Road, and Delaware State roadway Smiths Bridge Road.
Local access will be maintained. Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
The South Creek Road bridge, which is currently posted with a 12-ton weight restriction, carries approximately 1,903 vehicles per day. For more information and detour map, please see the South Creek Road bridge project webpage.
Haines & Kibblehouse, Inc. of Philadelphia, is the general contractor on this project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds.
