Brinton Run Preserve is a 71-acre public preserve located at 6 Oakland Road in Chadds Ford Township, within the Brandywine Creek Greenway. This ecologically rich property features diverse natural habitats including woodlands, open fields, streams, and a pond, and is recognized as one of the most significant tracts within the Brandywine Battlefield.
The preserve was formerly privately owned by Mrs. Frank Baldino, who partnered with the North American Land Trust (NALT) to prevent future development and ensure long-term conservation. With the generous support of many, NALT successfully acquired the property and established Brinton Run Preserve as its first publicly accessible preserve.
To guarantee permanent protection, a Conservation Easement is held by Chadds Ford Township, ensuring the land remains undeveloped and preserved for future generations. This easement formalizes the Township’s commitment to conservation and public stewardship of the land.
Brinton Run Preserve sits on the traditional territory of the Lenape people. NALT acknowledges the Lenape as the original stewards of this land and has honored their legacy by signing the Treaty of Renewed Friendship in 2022, committing to four years of active support for the Lenape community and cultural heritage.
Funding to acquire and preserve the Brinton Run Preserve was made possible through contributions from multiple sources:
-
North American Land Trust (NALT)
-
Chadds Ford Township Open Space funds
-
Delaware County Open Space Program
-
Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR)
-
Private donors and conservation partners
Brinton Run Preserve is now open to the public, offering a space where visitors can explore its natural beauty and reflect on its deep historical and cultural significance. Recent ecological studies, including bat monitoring using Wildlife Acoustics bat recorders, have highlighted the preserve’s thriving biodiversity, adding to its value as a vital conservation site.
